AWISCO AWARDS 2006
The AWISCO Awards Committee chaired by Dr. Joan M. Herbers, Dean of the College of Biological Sciences, has completed its selection of outstanding women for the AWISCO awards for 2006. The Committee has made the following recommendations:
Outstanding Woman in Science Award: Dr. Kathleen Boris-Lawrie
Dr. Boris-Lawrie received her BS and MS degrees from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale) and her PhD in Molecular Genetics from George Washington University. She came to OSU in 1996 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001 and to Professor in 2005. She is also affiliated with the department of Molecular Virology, Immunology, and Medical Genetics. Dr. Boris-Lawrie's research focuses on how retroviruses exploit their host cell machinery to form copies of themselves. Her work has generated 34 refereed articles, more than $5M in external funding, and two patents.
Dr. Boris-Lawrie's has made many efforts to promote the careers of women. She has served as mentor to 7 women junior faculty, 3 postdoctoral scientists (two women) and 9 graduate students (6 women). In addition, medical scientists, undergraduates and high school students have received training in her laboratory. Dr, Boris-Lawrie serves on study sections as an active reviewer and is involved in professional societies. She also serves in numerous interdisciplinary groups in addition to her department and college.
Outstanding Service Award: Rosemarie A. Husney
Ms Rosemarie A. Husney has been active with AWISCO for several decades and has enthusiastically and effectively supported the Board in implementing activities, meetings and programs. She has served as a member of the AWISCO Board of Directors and as Membership Chair since 1994. Her duties include being the contact person for AWISCO for the Membership Services division of the national AWIS office, receiving and processing membership information, communicating regularly with the executive director and assisting in AWISCO’s work with scientific organizations in the Central Ohio region.
Ms. Husney received a BA degree in Biology and Chemistry from the College of Wooster. She spent many years in Rochester New York, working for Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories and for the University of Rochester. She spent an additional 5 years at SUNY-Syracuse before relocating to Columbus, where she worked at the Ohio State University Medical Center, Division of Hematology/Oncology for over 25 years. During her career, she has contributed to work in radiation biology, cervical cancer, infertility, blood disorders including leukemia, and effects of zero gravity on astronauts' blood!
Now retired, Rosemarie remains active in the community, and gives generously of her time to AWISCO, her church, and other service organizations.
