CAREER DEVELOPMENT

AWISCO has established a Career Development Committee for the purpose of developing and maintaining resources for networking, mentoring and facilitation of career transitions for women in science throughout Ohio. A Listserver and a Career Transition Stories page are currently available, and a Who's Who Directory is coming soon. You can be both a user and a contributor. Please read the introductory material on this page and tell your colleagues. Your feedback is welcome and appreciated. Please contact

      Raquel Diaz-Sprague (614) 268-1488, diaz-sprague.1@osu.edu
or   Sujata Gamage (614) 292-1311, gamage.1@osu.edu..

We value your comments as we seek to improve and expand the AWISCO resources for women in science.

AWISCO LISTSERVER

CAREER TRANSITION STORIES

Lately there has been much interest in encouraging scientists and engineers to broaden their horizons and think 'beyond the box' of their disciplines. For example, Science On Line Service of the AAAS maintains a special site for stories about various types of career transitions.

       http://nextwave.sciencemag.org/trn.dtl

In a recent issue of the Chemical and Engineering News the American Chemical Society made a request for such stories .

Often career transition situations vary from locale to locale. For example, Sujata Gamage made a career transition from research in a chemistry laboratory to strategic analysis and planning in higher education. She personally experienced the value of stories from other men and women in her situation within the central Ohio region where she resides. The purpose of the AWISCO Career Transition Story initiative is to provide you with a series of real-life accounts of successful career moves. We strongly encourage narratives having a Central Ohio flavor, but welcome descriptions of any career transition experience that would assist women contemplating similar moves.

Please email your story to gamage.1@osu.edu. It can be as personal or as detailed as you desire. Check the Science On Line web site for Sujata's story if you would like to see the types of formats used by others. Do send us your story. We can all benefit from sharing our experiences.
